LUANN AND CHARLES ARE BACK IN MAUI!
Travel with LuAnn and Charles (a.k.a. TLC) in this multi-blog series. In Part Three of this series, LuAnn & Charles provide recommendations for the best food on Maui (with photos!).
We love Maui for many reasons. One of the main reasons for Charles is the local food. Traveling in October 2020 while the state was in early stages of re-opening, several of our favorite restaurants were still closed. We took this as an opportunity to discover other hidden gems on the island.
Here are some of our favorites. Most of them are very convenient if you are staying on the West side of Maui. (Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kapalua).
Star Noodle (closed during our visit)
Star Noodle owners are the same as Aloha Plate and they have consolidated the venues. Star Noodle has relocated to Front Street in Lahaina to the previous location of Aloha Plate. This restaurant has won many Best of Maui Food Awards.
Mama’s Fish House (closed during our visit)
Is “the” restaurant to visit on Maui’s north shore. The food is known for its freshest of seafood and views of the hang-gliders and parasailing from the restaurants is fabulous.
This quaint store is located in Makawao and is 84 years young! If you travel up country, this is a must stop. They are known for the Guava Malasadas, Stick Donuts & Cream Puffs. The cream puffs look dry in the picture, but they are perfect when you bite into them releasing a vanilla flavor of custard into your mouth.
Great café for food pickup. Truly a local food place known for their consistent flavors of local cuisine and especially known for their variety of Loco Moco’s. (A beef patty on rice with fried onions, brown gravy and an egg on top.)
Tiki Tiki is a hidden gem on Front Street. They offer take out, indoor dining and patio seating. The Pad Thai, Thai Fried Rice and Spicy Beef Salad were off the planet!
Who knew that some of the best poke is found in the grocery store! A wide variety of fresh fish marinated in various flavors of soy sauce and spice.
Beautiful location on the water. The perfect place to watch the sunset. Indoor and patio dining. Romantic venue with exquisite cuisine. Did we mention the sunsets?
Another local food restaurant but located on the North side of Maui next to Kahului in one of the oldest townships of Wailuku. This one took some searching to find but worth the trip.
Maui Brewing Company – Lahaina & Kihei
Conveniently located in a strip mall facing the main road that runs through Kaanapali. It is known for the wide selection of beers and the burgers.
This is a street front take out place only! A wide variety of local foods to tease a hungry palate and at a very reasonable price.
Duke’s (closed during our visit)
A very short walk on the ocean boardwalk from the Westin Villas.
A nice and casual restaurant with a special menu designed by 2 young local chefs who were inspired by Korean, Chinese and American cuisine. Enjoyed this place located at the end of a strip mall in Napaili Kai.
A special treat when we found a food establishment hidden within an ABC store. To our surprise they had a full menu with a wide variety of food both main and local and which changed on a daily basis.
A nice, casual restaurant located within the Napili Kai hotel complex and right on the beachfront facing a beautiful view. Food is great and service friendly. We recommend visiting during the Happy Hour for the best menu items and cheapest drinks, of course! Definitely try the Ahi Poke Bowl and the Crispy “Cauliflower” Wings.
McDonalds
Surprise! Yes, only in Hawaii does McDonalds offer local specialty dishes like Loco Moco etc. Must say, that they surely tasted very authentic and Charles ate there on multiple occasions as they were close to the hotel.
