Recently, Melissa sat down with LuAnn and Charles to hear more about their first trip to Unico 20°87° in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

They spent 8 nights at the adults-only resort in a One Bedroom Estancia Suite. These beautiful (and spacious!) suites are located in the buildings closest to the beach. Some have tropical views of the pool and palm trees, while the suites on the highest floors have ocean views.

Before we jump into the Q&A, take a peek at LuAnn’s quick video tour of the room.

Question: How would you describe UNICO to someone that has never visited the resort?

C & L: An elegant, all-inclusive luxury resort, in an adults only setting with tasting menu quality cuisine and attentive service.

Question: What were you most excited about leading up to the trip?

C: To relax and be pampered in luxury and to enjoy good food and copious amounts of Tequila!

L: Same as Charles…. without the copious amounts of Tequila. I’m a pina colada, mojito and wine person 😊 We chose the dates in part, to celebrate my birthday. We also knew we were going to indulge in a couples massage and I was looking forward to a long overdue manicure/pedicure.

*Melissa’s favorite thing about Unico is their signature robes that are available for every guest. They are the first thing she puts on when she arrives and the last thing she wants to leave behind. It looks like LuAnn may feel the same way.*

Question: What piece of advice would you give to travelers who are heading to UNICO?

C: Decide in advance to upgrade to a larger suite and if not, to the highest floor as you can hear the occupants above you.

L: We chose to upgrade for a better view of the ocean on the quiet side and exclusively used the quiet pool by our building. Although everything is in close proximity, the quiet side is also closer to the restaurants. That was convenient for Charles.

Question: What kind of safety protocols were in place?

C & L: Motor vehicle tires were sprayed before entering the resort grounds. Luggage was wiped down upon arrival. Temperature was taken prior to entry into the resort. Social distancing applied throughout the check-in and check-out process in the lobby.

The staff throughout the resort wore masks at all times. Restaurant seating and timing of reservations considered social distancing. Tables and chairs were constantly cleaned. Outside furniture by the pool and on the beach was spaced appropriately and disinfectant sprayed.

On every occasion and when entering a restaurant or a store you were greeted with a disinfectant gel. You were given the opportunity to scan a QR code for the drink and food menu. Limited written menus were available, if you preferred. Pool food and bar service was available using the pool waiter, or by using the Unico app.

Question: What was your favorite thing about the resort?

C: The “Tasting Menu Quality” of the cuisine at each of the restaurants – exception was the Japanese restaurant. The Japanese restaurant was a favorite among some of the other guests, however, we preferred the other restaurants quality of food and service.

L: The luxury, attentive staff and how safe I felt. This was the first time we ate in a restaurant since March. I am somewhat of a germaphobe, however, I never felt insecure while on property. Also, having a full week being mask free was truly a joy!

Question: What was your favorite thing about your Estancia Suite – One Bedroom?

L: The 1270 sq ft Estancia suite was well proportioned between the Living area, Bedroom and Bathroom. It was very spacious. My happy place was the double balcony with an unobstructed view of the ocean.

Question: What was your favorite meal from the trip?

C: Very hard question as many favorites come to mind – Believe it or not, Spaghetti Carbonara at the Italian restaurant (Mi Carisa) was off this planet! Lunch at 20.87 with octopus ceviche and ahi tuna is not to be missed!

L: The mushroom cappuccino at the Italian restaurant (Mi Carisa) was so yummy! I also enjoyed (several times) the veggie tacos at 20.87.

C & L: At Cueva Siete, I loved the guacamole (Charles is allergic to avocado) and Charles enjoyed the crickets on the side (I’m a vegetarian). We also enjoyed room service – the rancho huevos for breakfast and the rib eye in the evening were our personal favorites.

Question: Can you describe the resort in 3 words or less?

C & L: Luxury, Cuisine, Relaxation

Anything else you think people need to know?

C: Request the highest floor possible for both the view and no noise coming down from the ceiling.

L: I feel this property would be enjoyed by adults of all ages. At the active pool, you can play volleyball, do a spin class on the bikes in the water, or listen to the DJ. The quiet pool gives you that break from reality, with full service waiters.

L: They surprised me on my birthday with a pinata, balloons and candy with turndown service. They also indulged us with a romantic turndown and outdoor bath later in the week. The little touches make it special.

L: We noticed an enclosure on the beach and later found out it was to protect turtle eggs. Guests are invited down to watch the baby turtles go into the ocean, when the season is right.
